The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) has officially announced May 31, 2025, as the final date before the SASSA Gold Card expiration. After this expiry date, the Gold Cards will no longer be valid for transactions. However, despite the discontinuation of the gold cards, grant beneficiaries will continue receiving their funds without interruption until shifted to the New Black Cards.

SASSA launched a nationwide campaign in September 2024 to encourage recipients to migrate from the Gold Card to the new Black SASSA Card.

Originally, the deadline for this transition was set for February 28, 2025, but it was later extended to May 31, 2025, considering the public concerns. After the SASSA Gold Card expiry date, recipients will be able to withdraw their funds only after replacing their cards with the Postbank Black Card.

What is the SASSA Gold Card?

The SASSA Gold Card is a specialized bank card issued by the South African Social Security Agency for grant beneficiaries across the country. Its primary purpose is to introduce a secure, efficient, and uninterrupted method for recipients to access their monthly social grant, hence eliminating the need for manual or cash-based disbursements. SASSA also provide child support grant for the families who are unable to provide basic standard of living to their children.

As the SASSA Gold Card will expire in May 2025,  all social grant beneficiaries need to understand the necessary steps to avoid any payment delays. Here are some key points every recipient should know:

  • SASSA Gold Cards will no longer be functional after the expiry date. All transactions, including withdrawals, balance inquiries, and retail purchases, will be blocked after the deadline.

  • The Social Grant recipients of SASSA must switch their Gold Card to the new Postbank Black Card before the expiry date.

Why is the SASSA Gold Card Being Replaced? Key Features of the New Black Card

The transition from the SASSA Gold Card to the Postbank Black Card aims to introduce a more advanced and efficient grant payment system in South Africa. The new Black Cards offer various improved functionalities for millions of social grant beneficiaries. Below are some of the main reasons for replacing Gold Cards with Black Cards:

System Upgradation

As SASSA cards are expiring on May 31, 2025, replacing them is essential to ensure that around 1.3 million grant beneficiaries continue to receive payments without disruptions. Also, the transition to the New Black Cards introduces a more modern, secure, and well-managed payment system for SASSA fund recipients.

Transition to Updated Postbank Platform

The move from the Gold Card to the Black Card represents a shift from the older payment platform to Postbank’s updated system. Postbank’s advanced infrastructure now plays a central role in the efficient disbursement of social grants and collaborates well with national payment systems to ensure smooth and secure transactions.

Better Security Features

The Postbank Black Card provides enhanced security features designed to protect beneficiaries against fraud and unauthorized transactions.

Integration with National Payment Systems

After SASSA Gold Card expiration, the recipients can easily access their funds through multiple payment systems with the new Postbank Black Cards. These include ATMs (regardless of your bank), POS (Point-of-Sale) machines, and both partnered and non-partnered retailers. This system provides greater flexibility and accessibility for beneficiaries across the country.

Maximized Support for Vulnerable Citizens

SASSA has introduced a contingency plan for bedridden grant beneficiaries by which elderly or medically unfit persons can request home visits for card replacement with proper documentation. Also, if you do not have any one to take care of you and you need elderly care, you can check out SASSA old age homes.

How to Replace SASSA Gold Card After Expiry Date?

SASSA Gold Card holders can easily replace their expired cards with the new Black Card completely free of charge. To do so, just visit your nearest participating retailer, such as Boxer, Usave, Pick n Pay, Checkers, and Shoprite and bring along your South African Identity Document or temporary ID.

The staff at the Retail shop will guide you through the entire process of exchanging your current Gold Card for Postbank’s Black Card.

Nikki Mbengash, CEO of Postbank, in a recent interview, assured that SASSA beneficiaries will continue to receive their grant funds into their bank accounts. The only issue to use them is the expired Gold Cards which need to be replaced in order to access the funds

SASSA and Postbank have established over 320 designated service points nationwide where beneficiaries can replace their Gold Cards with the new Black Cards. Among the most popular service providers are Checkers, Shoprite, Boxer, Spar, and Pick n Pay stores.

Social Grant recipients who are medically unfit or unable to visit these service points in person can request home assistance by contacting the SASSA  call centre. However, to qualify, they must provide a medical certificate or a clinic letter verifying their health condition.

How Will SASSA Gold Card Expiration Affect Grant Beneficiaries?

SASSA and Postbank are urging all social grant beneficiaries to replace their Gold Cards with the new Black Cards by May 31, 2025 to ensure uninterrupted access to their funds and a smooth transaction process.

After this deadline, Gold Cards will no longer be valid for any transactions at ATMs, including balance inquiries and accessing account statements. Moreover, all retail purchases made using the expired Gold Cards will also be blocked.

Yes, the SASSA Gold Card is still operational and can continue to be used for transactions until it is replaced with the new Postbank Black Card. However, May 31, 2025 is the final deadline for SASSA Gold Card validity, after which they will expire and can no longer be used to access grant funds.
